Johannesburg -

Former president Nelson Mandela will be missed but his legacy will live on, family friend George Bizos said on Friday.

“None of us are immortal, but he was a great friend,” he said in an interview with eNCA.

“It's very difficult to accept that he will no longer be around.”

Bizos said he regularly visited Mandela when he was imprisoned on Robben Island during South Africa's apartheid years.

He said Mandela had contributed to a peaceful transition to democracy and would go down in history as a person who set an example to the world.

President Jacob Zuma announced that Mandela had died peacefully at his Johannesburg home on Thursday night.
