Bloodstains found in the car of William Nkuna, who is alleged to have murdered constable Frances Rasuge, show a 99 percent match to her parent's DNA.

This was not disputed on Monday by Nkuna, the man accused of the murder of the North West constable, when he pleaded not guilty to the murder charge, but elected not to explain his plea.

But William Rasuge admitted under cross-examination that his family had used Nkuna's vehicle to attend a family funeral in Alexandra a month before his daughter disappeared.

However, 42-year-old Nkuna admitted before Judge Ronald Hendricks, of the Mmabatho High Court, that he had used Rasuge's cellphone a day after her disappearance.

The state said Nkuna made seven calls and received four from Rasuge's phone on August 28 last year.

Nkuna admitted making a statement to police when he laid a charge of conspiracy to murder against Rasuge and a police officer on September 3, and admitted that Rasuge had obtained a protection order against him on May 10, although he later said it was never served on him.

Rasuge went missing on August 27 after being taken from a hair salon in Temba by Nkuna. They were lovers at the time.

It is alleged that Nkuna was the last person to be seen with Rasuge. The state believes Nkuna killed Rasuge in a manner unknown to it.

First to take the stand was the father of the missing constable, William Rasuge, who told the court he could not think of any reason why his daughter would leave their common home.

He said he was aware of a relationship between his daughter and Nkuna, but did not know how long they had been lovers or when the relationship ended.

William Rasuge told the court he had heard only after his daughter disappeared that she had a new boyfriend.

Rasuge admitted under cross-examination that his family had used Nkuna's vehicle to attend a family funeral in Alexandra a month before his daughter disappeared.

Another witness, Midrand businessman Percy Sibiya, told the court of his long-standing friendship with Nkuna.

He said he was aware that Nkuna was once accused of raping Rasuge and that the charges were later withdrawn.

Sibiya did not know of any reason that could have led Nkuna to kidnap or murder her.

Rasuge's boyfriend, Stuart Abnor Sello Ramasodi, 41, for whom Rasuge had bought several gifts, said they had already been delivered to his neighbour and were to be presented to him on the night she disappeared.

It was during his testimony that Rasuge was painted as a "two-timer" who kept both Nkuna and Ramasodi as lovers.

Ramasodi, who spent three weekends a month with her, said that three months into his relationship with Rasuge, he was surprised to discover that Nkuna was still in the picture.

The case continues.
