A pedestrian was killed and another critically injured after being hit by a cash-in-transit vehicle on Ou Kaapseweg.

Tristan Wadeley, media spokesman for ER24, said the two pedestrians, believed to be Table Mountain National Park workers, were hit by the vehicle on Sunday morning as they walked along Ou Kaapseweg at the Silvermine Road intersection.

Wadeley said medical crews from the Cape Medical Response, Metro EMS, ER24, fire services and a doctor who stopped to assist worked hard to stabilise both patients at the scene.

But he said one of the patients, a 40-year-old man, deteriorated in the ambulance. Paramedics tried to resuscitate the patient, but he was pronounced dead at Victoria Hospital.

The other patient, 27-year old Bongiswa Magubudela, who is believed to be from Masiphumelele informal settlement, sustained severe injuries to her left leg and was rushed to Groote Schuur Hospital for further treatment.

According to Wadeley, poor visibility may have been the cause of the accident.

Police spokesperson Captain Riaan Bester told the Cape Argus his station received the call around 7.40am on Sunday.

Bester said the two pedestrians had been walking on the side of the road with their backs to the oncoming traffic, and had not seen or heard the vehicle.

"Neither of the two pedestrians saw or heard the van approaching, and it doesn't seem as though the driver saw them either," he said.

He added that the two were walking along a "sharp bend" when they were struck by the van.

Bester confirmed that one person had been killed and the other critically injured.

He said police officials were dispatched to the scene immediately, as the vehicle was still loaded with an undisclosed amount of money.

"We had to go out and secure the area because the money the van was transporting had not yet been delivered," he said

Bester said a police case had been opened to investigate the matter.
