Johannesburg - Cosatu in the North West on Tuesday congratulated matriculants following the announcement of the 2013 matric pass rate by Basic Education Minister Angie Motshekga.
“We want to thank all educators for making sure that our province (came) second in the country, “Congress of SA Trade Unions provincial spokesman Norman Mampane said in a statement.
Motshekga announced a 78.2 percent pass rate for the 2013 matric class on Monday. In 2009, when Motshekga took over as minister, the pass rate was 60.6 percent. It has climbed steadily since then.
The Free State and North West became the first and second best performing provinces in the country.
The North West improved from 79.5 percent to 87.2 percent.
“The North West matric results of 2013 must send a clear message to everybody in the country that (the province) can do better than what it has been doing in the past years,” said Mampane.
“Our learners, our educators of 2013 operated under very bad conditions.”
Mampane called on those matriculants who did not do well not to lose hope.
“There are ways of making sure that they can get their matric using our government institutions in the province.” - Sapa
