Create ‘workaholic’ schools: Sadtu

Johannesburg - The SA Democratic Teachers' Union on Tuesday called on teachers to promote a “workaholic environment” at schools.

“We would like to encourage teachers to... promote a workaholic schooling environment and deliver quality education,” general secretary Mugwena Maluleke said in a statement.

He said the year had begun on a positive note following the best matric pass in 10 years. The country owed the good results to teachers.

“Many of you teach in poor schools where you sometimes have to dig from your own pockets in order to find resources to teach.”

The union wanted to see the Education Labour Relations Council improve conditions of service for teachers.

“The quality of public education is directly proportional to our conditions of service.”

At its national general council last year, the union called for a greater focus on fighting crime and bullying in schools.

Maluleke said schools were becoming dangerous for pupils and teachers because of crime.

“We declared that violence against teachers should be put to an end without any delay.”
