Johannesburg - The Dean of the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University decided not to allow DA leader Helen Zille to deliver a lecture on Steve Biko on Wednesday.
Spokesperson Pieter Swart said the university did not want two public lectures on the same topic.
“It simply does not make sense, it would confuse the public, split attendance, and detract from the honour to bestowed on Steve Biko and his memory (sic).”
One lecture, by the Centre for the Advancement of Non-Racialism and Democracy, had been planned since the start of the year. The request for the other, by the Democratic Alliance Students' Organisation, came less than a week ago.
“Zille did not inform the public that she spoke at the university just a week ago, with full consent of the university,” Swart said.
Zille said on Twitter: “Very sadly the university refused me permission to be there. They said there is another one (lecture). I was very disappointed.”
