Driver trapped at three times speed limit

A Cape Town motorist was recorded doing almost three times the speed limit in a 60km/h zone at the weekend, the city's traffic services said on Tuesday.

Spokeswoman Merle Lourens said a camera recorded a vehicle doing 168kmh on Vanguard Drive on the Cape Flats.

She said the motorist would not be given the option of an admission-of-guilt fine but would have to go to court, probably on a charge of reckless or negligent driving.

The next highest speed recorded in a weekend city-wide blitz on offenders was 149km/h.

Lourens said a total of 4897 speeding fines were issued.

At the same time 50 people were arrested at their homes on 203 warrants of arrest for outstanding fines.

She said that on Monday 184 motorists were fined for travelling illegally in the bus/minibus taxi lane on the N2. - Sapa
