Durban police close highway

The M4 highway between Umdloti and Umhlanga has been closed to traffic because it is sinking, the KwaZulu-Natal Road Traffic Inspectorate said on Friday.

Durban metro police closed the south-bound carriageway of the road on Thursday morning "because they wanted to protect motorists", said inspectorate spokesperson Zinhla Mngomezulu.

She said that while the asphalt had not cracked, there was a clearly visible subsiding of the road.

Engineers were being sent to the scene to assess the extent of the problem.

It was not yet known how long the road would remain closed for repairs, but at this stage the closure was being described as "permanent".

"As soon as the problem is sorted out the road will be reopened to traffic, said Mngomezulu. The north-bound carriageway remained open.

Traffic using the south-bound section was being diverted at Umdloti to the N2 to Durban, she said. - Sapa
