King William's Town - Kei Bridge police detectives have arrested a 41-year-old man for allegedly shooting dead his 23-year-old girlfriend, Eastern Cape police said on Saturday.

"The murder was committed on the night of Tuesday 27 June 2017 at Mahlubini location, Manqulo village near Kei Bridge, Butterworth," Captain Jackson Manatha said.

The woman was shot in her upper body. Her body was found by a passerby during the morning of Wednesday June 28.

"Kei Bridge police detectives worked around the clock to crack the case. The 41-year-old suspect was traced and arrested at Mqanduli on Friday 7 July 2017. The firearm that was allegedly used in the commission of murder was also recovered," Manatha said.

This was another shocking and senseless case where a defenceless woman was murdered, Butterworth policing cluster commander Brigadier Trevor Mey said.

"It must be emphasised that the safety of women and children is a top priority for the Eastern Cape police. The non-stop investigation of such cases is in line with our back to basics policing approach which requires efficient and responsive investigation of crime, utilising all resources at our disposal to ensure that offenders are brought to book to face the consequences of their ruthless deeds,” Mey said.

The woman was identified as Zusiphe Mki. The arrested man would appear in the Butterworth Magistrate's Court on Monday on a charge of murder, Manatha said.
