A pair of conjoined twins were born at the Dr Malizo Mpehle district hospital in Tsolo, in Mthatha, on Wednesday, the Eastern Cape health department said.

“The girls have a combined weight of four kilograms,” spokesman Sizwe Kupelo said in a statement.

“They share an umbilical cord. Doctors at the Nelson Mandela Academic hospital are now assessing to see if they are not sharing vital organs. They have a joined upper abdomen and chest.”

Kupelo said the girls might be referred to the Red Cross Children's hospital in Cape Town.

This is the fifth set of conjoined twins born in the Transkei in the past 24 months, he said. - Sapa
