Johannesburg - Four nurses were killed in a tragic car accident while on their way to a graduation ceremony in the Eastern Cape, the Democratic Nursing Organisation of South Africa (Denosa) said on Thursday.

The four nurses were from Lilitha College of Nursing School in Lusikisiki campus and were on the way to a graduation ceremony in in Fort Hare, Alice on Wednesday evening.

Denosa said three other nurses injured in the accident were hospitalised.

Denosa’s acting provincial secretary in Eastern Cape, Khaya Sodidi, said the four deceased nurses worked very hard to be among those who were graduating.

“They worked so hard to improve their careers and the livelihood of their loved ones and it is indeed sad that they left so tragically without living their dreams to the fullest, and serving their communities,” Sodidi said in a statement.

Sodidi said the death of the nurses was a huge setback.

“Their death strikes at the greatest time of need when we are faced with the ever-growing gross shortage of nursing staff in our facilities in the province,” Denosa said.

It was not immediately clear what caused the accident.

Denosa is planning to host pre-Aids Conference meeting for nurses in Durban this weekend.
