Doctors and other health professionals employed by the Eastern Cape government will be paid on time, an official said on Monday.

“Not paying them would be criminal and illegal and it can't happen,” Eastern Cape health spokesman Sizwe Kupelo said.

“All health professionals employed by us will be paid on time at the end of the month.

It was reported on Monday that health professionals in the province would be paid only in April.

“We suspect the stories could have been started by junior doctors running away from doing community service in rural areas,” said Kupelo.

The department gave bursaries to students annually on condition that they work back the amount of years for which they got the bursaries, said Kupelo.

“We have all the particulars of the graduates who need to work in rural areas as stipulated by their contracts. We will track them all down. We can't watch our investment go to other provinces.”

Kupelo said tracking down the junior health professionals was in the best interest of the province because the province had invested in them. - Sapa
