Port Alfred - An eight-month-old baby was found dead in her parents' bed in Port Alfred, Eastern Cape police said on Monday.

Lieutenant Luvuyo Mjekulo said the mother, 31, and her 41-year-old boyfriend had taken the infant and their two-year-old son with them when they went drinking at a neighbour's house on Saturday.

They later returned home.

“She and the two children got into the same bed and went to sleep, leaving the boyfriend in the lounge,” said Mjekulo.

At around 5am, the mother was woken up by her boyfriend who was lying next to her in bed.

“He wanted to know where the baby was,” said Mjekulo.

“As he... got up, she (saw) the baby was underneath him and a white fluid was coming out of her nose.”

Paramedics were called and they confirmed that the baby was dead. An inquest docket was opened and police were investigating the cause of the baby's death.

“We will wait for the inquest results to determine whether we should make any arrests,” Mjekulo said.
