Johannesburg - The Nelson Mandela Bay municipality in the Eastern Cape is ready to deal with anticipated heavy rain, it said on Monday.

“The Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality is on alert after the South African Weather Service issued warnings of heavy rain for Monday evening and Tuesday,” said municipal spokesperson Kupido Baron.

He said the Third Avenue Dip in Newton Park as well as other low-level bridges would be closed on Tuesday.

Motorists were requested to be careful as wet roads could be treacherous.

The South African Weather Service said earlier on Monday that bitterly cold conditions were expected over large parts of the country this week.

“Very cold” conditions were defined as maximum temperatures of 10 degrees Celsius or below, forecaster Vanetia Phakula said.

The Western Cape, Eastern Cape and southern KwaZulu-Natal had a high probability of rainfall.

Snow was predicted over parts of these provinces and the southern Free State. - Sapa
