ECAPE EDUCATION INTERVENTION DELIVERS

Interventions by the national government in the Eastern Cape education department have delivered results, Parliament said on Wednesday.

However, there were still problems, Parliament said in a statement.

It said Eastern Cape education MEC Mandla Makupula and department head Modidima Manya had delivered a progress report to select committee on education and recreation chairwoman Wendy Makgate, it said.

The committee was on an oversight visit in the province at the moment.

"The committee heard that great progress had been made in all six identified priority areas," Parliament said.

These included: human resources capacity, the national school nutrition programme, pupil-teacher support material, pupil transport and school infrastructure development.

Manya had told the committee that the previously collapsed transport system had been fully functional since the intervention last year because of a an agreement with the provincial transport department.

On Wednesday, the committee visited the Mzontsundu Secondary School in Port Elizabeth.

On Thursday, it would visit the Walter Sisulu University's Potsdam campus.
