Port Elizabeth - Former Nelson Mandela Bay municipality spokesman Roland Aloysius Williams, 46, has appeared in the Port Elizabeth Magistrate's Court for alleged fraud, the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (Hawks) in the Eastern Cape said on Saturday.

"Williams is accused of allegedly submitting a fraudulent car insurance claim to a Port Elizabeth company," Eastern Cape Hawks spokesperson Captain Anelisa Feni said.

"He claimed he was allegedly involved in a car accident in Motherwell and after submitting claims the insurance company paid out a substantial amount of money. The claim was reported to the Hawks'  serious commercial crime [unit] which led to Williams's arrest on Thursday."

Williams was granted R2000 bail by the court and he would again appear in the same court on August 23, Feni said.
