A fourth player from Eleven Stars football club has died at a local hospital following a car accident at the R346 road in the Eastern Cape, the club said on Tuesday.

Kwakhanya 'Makhwenkwe' Ngxingolo, 21, died at St Dominic’s Hospital in East London on Friday after spending three months in its intensive care unit, said club president Siyabulela Makunga.

“His untimely passing has left his family, the club and the entire Kubusi Community in shock and sadness,” he said.

Makhwenkwe was admitted at the hospital on September 1, after being critical injured in a car crash in which 10 people died.

His teammates, Awethu Dyantyi, Siviwe Green and Abulele Bomela were among those who died.

The club, which is based in Kabusi Village, had been on its way back from a soccer tournament in Ndakana Village in the Eastern Cape at the time of the crash.

“After fighting a testing battle for his life, I’ve seen my son recovering and was hoping that he will spend Christmas with us this December, only to wake up to saddening news that he was no more,” said Makhwenkwe’s mother Luleka Ngxingolo.

She remembered her son as a brave young man and a fighter.

“Through the help of Lord, I’m hoping to eventually come to terms with his passing,” she said.

Makunga said Makhwenkwe would be remembered by his teammates and peers as an ambitious, energetic, disciplined and unifying player.

“He was a left back player who took the game of football to his heart at all times.”

Makhwenkwe will be buried at his home in Kubusi Village (Stutterheim) at 9am on Saturday. - Sapa
