Eastern Cape - A fire killed three people, including children aged nine and 11 years-old, in Willowvale in the Eastern Cape, after their house caught alight early on Tuesday morning, police said.

Police spokesperson Captain Jackson Manatha said the neighbours saw flames coming of the house at Matolweni Locality, Nqadu Village, in Willowvale at around 5am.

“They tried to enter but the gate was locked. They finally pushed the gate open,” Manatha said.

“Unfortunately a 70-year-old granny and her two grandchildren, a nine-year-old girl and a 11-year-old boy, all perished in the fire.”

Manatha said an electrical fault was suspected to be the cause of the fire.

“An inquest docket has been opened for further investigation. The identities of all the deceased will be withheld until their next of kin had been informed of their death.”
