Residents of Duncan Village, East London, blocked roads and burned tyres in a housing protest on Wednesday, Eastern Cape police said.

Protesters toyi-toyied and blocked roads with rubble and burning tyres over government housing that had been 'hijacked' from them, said Captain Stephen Marais.

“The protesters have the title deeds to government houses allotted to them, but the houses have been illegally occupied by other people,” he said.

The protesters refrained from violence and dispersed peacefully when given a verbal warning. The use of force was not necessary.

Marais said protests were held over the same issue in October and November last year. - Sapa
