A man was killed when a tree uprooted by gale force winds crushed his car in Walmer, Port Elizabeth, on Monday afternoon, paramedics said.

“Netcare 911 paramedics and the fire services arrived at the scene and found that the vehicle and driver were crushed under the weight of the enormous tree,” spokesman Chris Botha said in a statement.

The driver died on the scene. A crane was used to move the tree, as firefighters were unable to use the Jaws-of-Life to extricate the body. – Sapa
