Eastern Cape - The Eastern Cape education MEC and the DA have intervened in an illegal strike by teachers in Bedford, the party said on Wednesday.

“The DA is deeply concerned about the illegal staff strike at the Templeton High School in Bedford,” provincial legislature member Dacre Haddon said in a statement.

Haddon said he had spoken to education MEC Mandla Makupula about intervening in the matter.

“The MEC has been most accommodating and, armed with the contract details for the school, will be taking intervention with the principal to resolve this impasse.”

While the Democratic Alliance sympathised with teachers, the party could not condone the strike while children were sitting at home and not in the classroom. Haddon said the teachers had not been paid in four months. Nine temporary teachers were also waiting to be paid. - Sapa
