Eastern Cape - Hundreds of boxes of medication were found dumped outside Mvezo village, near Mthatha on Friday afternoon, said the Eastern Cape department of health.

Spokesman Sizwe Kupelo said the boxes were found by the police, and were from the Mthatha Medical Depot.

“We will launch an urgent probe into this. We will start with the managers at the depot and investigate how this happened,” he said.

“There is also a security company responsible for looking after the medication while it is being transported. We will look into them too.”

He said the department had been accused of poor service delivery, and “elements” in the province were trying to ruin its reputation.

“Those responsible will face the music. We will not allow sabotage and fraud in our province,” Kupelo said.

“We always receive complaints over the shortage of medication in hospitals, so we are going to take drastic steps in finding the culprits.” - Sapa
