Port Elizabeth - The Nelson Mandela Bay municipality in the Eastern Cape is ready to deal with anticipated heavy rains and floods, it said on Thursday.

The SA Weather Office has issued a heavy rain and floods warning for the area for Friday and Saturday.

“A joint operations centre, manned by municipal departments, disaster management, fire and emergency services, police and others will be established (on Friday) depending on weather conditions,” said municipal spokesman Kupido Baron.

Boom-gates to control water levels had been erected in the Newton Park area. The municipality asked motorists using the roads to show extra caution.

Baron said residents should be prepared in case they were required to perform emergency evacuations.

“Residents in the lower-lying areas are requested to store dry clothes and blankets in plastic bags that could be used if the need arises to relocate them.” - Sapa
