East London - A man who suffered a heart attack was rescued from a bulk carrier off the coast of East London on Thursday, the National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) said.
The Yasa Emirhan, sailing from Gabon to Singapore, asked for medical assistance after a 24-year-old Turkish crewman suffered a heart attack onboard, spokesman Craig Lambinon said.
The ship sent the request to the Maritime Rescue Co-ordination Centre around 12.40am.
“Following telephonic medical evaluation by a government health EMS duty doctor, the ship was instructed to set sail towards the nearest port, East London, and NSRI East London were placed on alert,” Lambinon said.
The NSRI met the ship eight nautical miles off the East London shore and stabilised the crewman.
He was taken to East London port and transferred to emergency services, who took him to St Dominic's Hospital in a stable condition.
