Port Elizabeth - A man died and another was critically injured on Saturday, when a truck collided with a bridge pillar on the N2 near Port Elizabeth in the Eastern Cape, paramedics said.

The truck was travelling towards Port Elizabeth when it crashed into the bridge at the Van Staadens off-ramp at around 6am, Netcare 911 spokesman Chris Botha said.

A passenger died before the paramedics arrived, while the jaws-of-life were used to free the critically wounded driver from the wreckage.

The driver was transported to hospital.

The road has been closed until the investigation is completed.
