Divers were on Friday still searching for a teenager feared drowned in Eerste River in the Eastern Cape, rescuers said.

The teenager went swimming with his 22-year-old brother and got caught in a strong current, said National Sea Rescue Institute spokesman Craig Lambinon.

“The brothers were caught in a rip current while taking an afternoon swim. The 22 year old managed to get to the shore but his brother, 19, reportedly disappeared in the surf and has not been seen since.”

An initial search on Thursday yielded nothing.

Lambinon said the brothers were part of a group of university students from Pretoria on vacation in the area.

“The sea conditions are rough. Police divers from Port Elizabeth have arrived to help with the search,” he said. – Sapa
