Cape Town - Shackdwellers’ movement Abahlali baseMjondolo has accused the DA of lying about the movement’s endorsement of the party in the Western Cape.

Abahlali had declared its support for the DA in KwaZulu-Natal for Wednesday’s election, but never endorsed the DA in the Western Cape, Abahlali national leader Sbu Zikode said on Wednesday.

DA provincial leader Ivan Meyer, who had earlier this week announced Abahlali’s support for the DA in the province, rejected the allegation that his party lied.

Zikode said the movement in the Western Cape supported the decision made by its KwaZulu Natal branch.

He confirmed an Abahlali statement which read: “We never declared our support for any political party in the Western Cape. We never had any agreement. The Western Cape branch supported the move made by KwaZulu-Natal. Nothing was signed or anything.

“We negotiated a legal agreement with the DA which commits them to support some of our more basic demands, We do not endorse its policies.”

Meyer said: “We signed a memorandum whereby they declared their support for the DA nationally, not only in KwaZulu-Natal.”
