Eastern Cape - A 72-year-old man was killed by a shark while swimming in Port St Johns on Saturday, the National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) said.

The Austrian tourist was swimming at Second Beach when he was attacked by the shark, said NSRI spokesman Craig Lambinon.

The man was part of the tour group that included his wife.

“NSRI Port St Johns volunteer sea rescue duty crew were activated following reports of a shark incident.”

The man was dead when the rescuers arrived.

“The species of shark involved in this incident is not known at this stage.”

Police have opened an inquest docket and the International Relations Department had been informed, Lambinon said. - Sapa
