A man is presumed drowned after being swept out to sea at Port Alfred in the Eastern Cape, said the National Sea Rescue Institute.

Spokesman Craig Lambinon said: “At 06h33 NSRI Port Alfred volunteer duty sea rescue crew were activated following reports of a drowning in progress at East Beach.”

The 20-year-old local man had reportedly entered the surf with a friend when he was knocked off his feet by a wave and swept out to sea.

The NSRI search was assisted by police and emergency services. The man was not found and is presumed drowned.

Police divers were continuing the search, said Lambinon on Tuesday afternoon. – Sapa
