South Africans took to social networking site Facebook to vent their anger on Thursday after a man was killed in a shark attack.
Johannesburg - A 25-year-old man was killed by a shark at Second Beach in Port St Johns on Sunday, the Eastern Cape health department said.
“This afternoon a swimmer from Port St Johns was attacked by a shark and struggled with it for about five minutes using his surf board,” said spokesperson Sizwe Kupelo.
“A surfer who was next to him during the ordeal described the swimmer as being brave by fighting it. Unfortunately it injured him severely in both arms and in the chest,” he said.
A second witness raised the alarm for other swimmers to leave the water.
“A doctor who was amongst the swimmers tried to save his life along with paramedics who arrived at the beach. The man died on the way to a local health centre.”
“Second Beach is notorious for shark attacks and I am told that there is no (shark) net there,” said Kupelo. - Sapa

Was he a swimmer or a surfer? Did he borrow the surfboard from the witness to fight off the shark?

Just an innocent question about the commas and quotes used in this article, why are the commas before the end quote like in the last sentence ("... is no (shark) net there,” said Kupelo.)? Is that the way it's supposed to be, wasn't how we learned it in school...

Maybe they should think about banning bathing and surfing at Port St Johns until the authorities and scientists figure out what's going on there!! This is about the 6th attack in a few years.

The swimmer fought the shark using his surfboard??...what makes him a swimmer as opposed to the surfer next to him??...who writes these?...anyway sad story and condolences to the family.
