Jeffrey’s Bay - A sea rescue operation has been launched in Jeffrey's Bay after a 16-year-old boy disappeared into the sea after being swept away by a wave, the National Sea Rescue Institute said on Sunday.

“The boy, from Port Elizabeth, disappeared into the water, a search operation has so far revealed no sign of the teenager,” spokesman Robin Brown said.

The teenager was part of a church group on the beach who were wading in the water together when a powerful wave hit them.

The group was able to pull a 16-year-old female, who nearly drowned, out of the water.

The teenage boy disappeared under the water before the group could reach him.

“If the missing teenager is not found today (Sunday) we will launch the rescue craft again on Monday to continue with the search.”

Police have opened an inquest docket. - Sapa
