Nurses' union Denosa is “disturbed” by a media report claiming that patients and newborn babies at two Eastern Cape hospitals slept on bloodied beds during the festive season.
Democratic Nursing Organisation of SA spokesman Asanda Fongqo said on Monday: “We utterly condemn the treatment of patients under such inhumane conditions.”
The Sunday Times reported that a private firm contracted to provide laundry services to East London's Frere and Cecilia Makhiwane hospitals did not own a washing machine.
The union called for “urgent” employment of full time support staff, including people responsible for providing laundry services to hospitals.
Fongqo said: “We have said time and time again that outsourcing services such as laundry is not only a waste of funds but contributes adversely on efficiency and quality.
“The situation in these hospitals also undermines one of the most significant health fundamentals of infection control and puts more lives at risk.” - Sapa
