Johannesburg - Port Elizabeth residents were advised to conserve water after pipelines supplying the city were damaged, the municipality said on Thursday.

Two pipes bringing water from the Churchill and Impofu dams to reservoirs were washed away during flooding near the Van Stadens River resort, spokesperson Kupido Baron said in a statement.

“These pipelines supply a third of the water supply to the city. Some areas will be affected after approximately 24 hours when reservoirs run dry.”

Affected areas included Central, Deal Party, Summerstrand, Humewood, North End, Korsten, Struandale, Mount Pleasant, Lovemore Park, Lovemore Heights, Algoa Park, Struandale, Gelvandale, Gelvan Park, and parts of New Brighton and KwaZakhele.

Water from the remaining two sources, Loerie and Nooitgedagt (Gariep Dam) was being diverted to limit the number of areas affected.

Residents in areas without water could call 0800-20-5050 for water tankers to be dispatched. - Sapa
