“I was supposed to be in Johannesburg today (Wednesday) to prepare for exams,” said Zakhe Gula.
He had wanted to consult with his lecturers to help prepare for next week's exams. The consultations would end on Thursday, he said.
Prof Carl Anyangwe said he was told his flight had been cancelled because of bad weather. He was supposed to catch another flight in Johannesburg on Thursday.
“If I don't get to Joburg today, I'm going to miss my flight,” he said.
Some people mulled the idea of trying their luck with afternoon flights. Others tried to make alternative arrangements as they could not afford to miss meetings in Johannesburg.
“I'm considering getting a car and drive to East London to get a flight from there. This is a huge inconvenience,” said Duduzile Msibi.
The Government Communications and Information System (GCIS) was not available to give clarity on how the cancellations would affect plans for the state funeral of former president Nelson Mandela in Qunu on Sunday.
OR Tambo district municipality mayor Nomakhosazana Meth said earlier on Wednesday that the Mthatha airport would be declared a no-fly-zone from Thursday.
“There are hangars to receive dignitaries and heads of state, but the military will be in control.
“Everything is in order there, and we are ready to warmly welcome our guests,” she said.
