A woman lost her arm when she was mauled by a boerboel dog in Uitenhage on Thursday, Eastern Cape police said.

Lt-Col Priscilla Naidu said the woman was attacked while walking in Vanes Estate at about 8am.

“It is believed the boerboel ran out into the street and attacked the woman,” she said.

Naidu said a neighbour heard the woman's screams and tried to help, but was also bitten.

“The woman was rushed to the Netcare Cuyler Hospital, where her right arm was later amputated,” Naidu said. She was in the hospital's intensive care unit.

SPCA inspector Koos Croucamp said the owner of the boerbul had asked for help in taking the dog to a vet.

“We only took the boerboel to the vet, where the owner met us. We don't know what is to happen to the boerboel,” Croucamp said. - Sapa
