The two-page load-shedding schedule for the Western Cape put out by Eskom at the weekend is merely a precaution and does not necessarily mean rolling blackouts will take place, Eskom spokesperson Andrew Etzinger has said.

Published in weekend newspapers and in Monday's Cape Times, the integrated schedule is to apply only to this month should the need for load-shedding arise.

"It's just a precautionary measure and hopefully we won't need it," Etzinger said.

"As we all know, the system is vulnerable."

Etzinger said a cold front could lead to a huge spike in electricity demand, creating the need for load-shedding.

Eskom was in regular contact with the South African Weather Service.

It was also using its own forecasters to track expected weather conditions, enabling the power utility to plan for any emergency load-shedding, Etzinger said.

According to the South African Weather Service's winter seasonal forecast, the country could experience "below normal temperatures" this month and next month.

The seasonal forecast also says the country could have more severe cold periods than last year. - Staff Reporter
