Former public protector Lawrence Mushwana sidestepped financial regulations by approving his own bonus and a R6.8 million golden handshake, former colleagues have alleged.

In Parliament yesterday, CEO Themba Mthethwa and Mushwana's former deputy, Mamiki Shai, expressed their unhappiness with the state of affairs at the Office of the Public Protector under his control.

Mushwana was public protector until October last year.

Shai and Mthethwa faced a grilling from the standing committee on public accounts over deficiencies in the 2008/2009 annual report.

They said they could not account for certain decisions as Mushwana had taken matters out of their hands. The pair could not account for some decisions because Mushwana had insisted on "total control".

Mushwana now chairs the SA Human Rights Commission.
