A Flats family who are plagued by mysterious fires will be celebrating Friday the 13th with an exorcism.

The religious ritual will be performed at their Nyanga home on Friday after the family complained that mysterious fires had destroyed their beds, cupboards and clothing over the past few months.

Anglican Catholic priest Father Mike Williams has agreed to perform the exorcism after reading about the family's plight in the Daily Voice two weeks ago.

Hopefully the ritual will finally rid the family of the evil spirit which has been hounding them since Phaphema Futschane, 30, returned from Pollsmoor prison earlier this year.

He believes someone has cursed him after he served time for an assault conviction.

Phaphema says the exorcism couldn't happen any sooner because the most recent fire happened on Wednesday.

"It burnt my mother's top cupboard only and lasted for 10 minutes," he says.

"I stopped the fire by throwing water on it."

He adds that his elderly parents Solomzi, 72, and his wife Sindiswa Futschane, 57, are relieved that the exorcism will be happening today.

"My family and I are very happy that the priest is coming," he says.

"My biggest hope is that the exorcism helps and that everything can go back to normal."

Father Mike says his church superiors gave him the authority to perform the ritual and he looks forward to helping the family. - Daily Voice
