Bloemfontein - Ten people, including a baby, were killed when a bakkie and a truck collided near Bloemfontein on Sunday morning, paramedics said.

A five-month-old baby, three children, and six adults were killed in the accident on the N1 about 40km outside Bloemfontein, near Edenburg, before 6am, ER24 spokesman Werner Vermaak said in a statement.

It was understood there were 14 people in the bakkie. The only occupant of the truck, the driver, was unhurt.

“Three people, including one child, survived this horrific incident and were rushed off to a nearby hospital for further medical care. All of them are in a critical condition.”

The cause of the accident was not yet known.

The N1 south was closed to traffic.

SABC news reported that the truck and Ford Bantam bakkie collided head-on when the bakkie ignored a stop sign at roadworks.
