The ACDP was “shocked and disgusted” on Wednesday by a report of a sewage spill and stench which caused families to evacuate their homes in Bethulie, in the Free State.

African Christian Democratic Party leader Rev Kenneth Meshoe said the party believed the government had to take responsibility for residents' medical costs caused by the sewage spill.

On Wednesday, the Sowetan newspaper reported that families in more than 10 houses had to use stepping stones to reach their homes, which were surrounded by the overflow from toilets not flushing properly.

Kopanong local municipality mayor Xolile Matwa was quoted as saying the municipality knew about the problem.

“It has been going on for a long time. Our engineers are working hard and it will be fixed within two weeks,” Matwa said.

Meshoe said his party had called for an urgent investigation into why it was taking the municipality such a long time to resolve the matter, which posed a “serious” health risk to residents. - Sapa
