A 17-year-old boy has died at an initiation school in Thaba Nchu in the Free State, police said on Tuesday.
Constable Consolation Mokoale said Itumeleng Mojafi died on Monday as the leader of the school was about to take him to hospital.
He visited the parents on the same day to convey the news. The cause of the boy's death was not immediately clear.
“We don't know whether he was cold or was beaten. He died when the leader came to take him with a car to hospital, as he was sick,” Mokaole said.
Mokoale said the parents had no idea that their son was at the initiation school, as he was last seen on June 17.
“They thought he was visiting his grandmother.”
