Bloemfontein - A man is in a critical condition in hospital after a manhole cover fell on him in Bloemfontein, paramedics said on Monday.

“Witnesses stated that the man had apparently been living in the manhole,” ER24 spokesman Russel Meiring said in a statement. He had apparently tried to climb up when the cover fell on top of him.

Paramedics found him in the manhole, on the pavement of the Currie and Pasteur road intersection, in the afternoon.

Once they had freed him they found he had no pulse and began efforts to resuscitate him. After some time his vital signs returned and he was taken to a nearby hospital.
