Bloemfontein - A 55-year-old glider pilot was killed when his aircraft crashed near the Tempe airport in Bloemfontein, Free State police said on Monday.

“The man, believed to be a Norwegian, died at the scene of the accident,” said Captain Chaka Marope.

Police said indications were that the pilot lost control of the aircraft in a strong wind.

The accident happened in a smallholding area about five kilometres from the Tempe airport.

ER24 spokeswoman Luyanda Majija earlier said the glider flipped backward, causing it to hit the launching platform with great impact.

Police have opened an inquest docket
