Petrus Steyn, Free State - A man died and seven people were injured when two vehicles collided head-on on the R57 near Petrus Steyn on Wednesday morning, paramedics said.

Emergency workers found the wreckage of a Land Cruiser and a Toyota Conquest obstructing the traffic, said Netcare 911 spokesman Chris Botha.

One person died on the scene and others were taken to various hospitals in the area with minor to critical injuries, he said.

Botha said the cause of the accident was not known.

All the occupants of the two vehicles were farm workers, he said. - Sapa
