Bloemfontein - A man was killed and seven others injured after two vehicles collided head-on on the N1, 40km outside of Bloemfontein in the Free State, ER24 reported on Tuesday.

ER24 paramedics, along with other services, arrived on scene and found the road blocked by a wrecked light motor vehicle. The second vehicle lay off in the veld a few metres away. Both vehicles had sustained a severe amount of damage in the collision.

“On assessment, paramedics discovered that the driver of one of the vehicles had sustained fatal injuries while the passenger had sustained critical injuries in the collision,” ER24 said. “Nothing more could be done for the driver and he was declared dead on scene.”

Five other patients were found in the second vehicle, their injuries ranging from minor to moderate. Paramedics carefully removed the patients from the vehicle, including a critically injured patient.

The patients were treated for their injuries and thereafter transported to various hospitals for further treatment. The critically injured patient was airlifted by medical helicopter to Rosepark Hospital for urgent medical treatment.

The cause of the collision was not known but local authorities were on scene for further investigations.
