Seven people were killed and 17 others were seriously injured when a minibus taxi and truck collided head-on on the Steynsrus road outside Kroonstad, in the Free State, paramedics said on Wednesday.

Netcare911 spokesman Jeffrey Wicks said six occupants of the minibus died in the crash on Tuesday night.

Eighteen other passengers were treated and stabilised at the scene. They were transported by ambulance to the Boitumelo State Hospital.

One of them died shortly after arriving at hospital, said Wicks. - Sapa
