Various Free State roads are closed because of heavy snowfall, the provincial police, roads and transport department said on Wednesday.

These included the road between Fouriesburg and Clarens, Clarens and QwaQwa, Kestell and QwaQwa, Harrismith and QwaQwa, Harrismith and Bergville, Setsing and Monontsha, and the road between the QwaQwa campus of the University of the Free State and Setsing.

Department spokesman Zolile Walaza said motorists travelling through the province needed to be extremely cautious.

This was especially relevant for those travelling overnight on Wednesday night and Thursday morning, as melting snow was expected to freeze and cause treacherous road conditions.

Roads would be opened only once the ice and snow had melted. - Sapa
