Three people received medical attention after a fire at the Tempe military support base in Bloemfontein on Friday.

Mangaung fire brigade spokesman Braam van Zyl said firemen were called to the scene at 8am. The flames were extinguished by 11am.

The fire apparently started on the top floor of a three storey building used as living quarters for soldiers, and destroyed most of it.

The three injured people were believed to be members of 44 Parachute Regiment.

Spokeswoman at 3 Military Hospital, Major Rina Coetzee said two people arrived at the hospital by ambulance.

One was treated for smoke inhalation and discharged. A third individual was in a stable condition after undergoing surgery in the morning, Coetzee said.

The cause of the fire was not immediately known. – Sapa
