A number of children were seriously injured when a bus carrying school children crashed and caught fire on the N3 highway between Warden and Harrismith in the Free State on Friday. Two children were unaccounted for and rescue workers were searching the wreckage of the burnt-out bus.

Netcare 911 spokesperson Chris Botha said two children were critically injured and were transported to a nearby hospital. A further four children sustained serious injuries while 17 others were treated for minor injuries.

Botha said: “The fire has now been put out by the fire brigade but there are two children that are unaccounted for and rescue workers are currently searching for them in the wreckage.”

The bus was completely gutted. The fire department, paramedics and members of the South African police were on the scene.
