Johannesburg – A six-year-old boy has drowned in a six-metre deep hole left on the site of an abandoned toilet building project in Tokologo Municipality, Free State.

Commenting on the tragedy on Thursday, Democratic Alliance (DA) Councillor Merafe Sekwaemang said the abandoned project was one of the African National Congress (ANC) government’s gimmicks in the run up to the election in 2016.

Sekwaemang said the ANC wanted to "falsely create the impression of service delivery".

The DA said it had sent its condolences to the family of the six-year-old boy.

"The boy was playing with his friends in the playground, which is approximately 500m from the hole and slipped and fell into the toilet trench."

"This tragedy should have been prevented if the ANC government cared enough to keep our communities safe, but instead, the uncaring ANC left open a dangerous hole that has now killed a child," said Sekwaemang, adding that the DA will demand a full investigation.

The municipality and the ANC were was not immediately available for comment.
